I woke up at early dawn hearing the slow breathing of Kristen, who was still asleep. I got out of bed and warmed the fire, then decided to get dressed. I looked in my wardrobe, and found my linen stockings. I pulled them on and got out my stomacher and put it on over my shift. I also found my stay. I had to tighten it, so I went to wake up Kristen.
“Wake up,” I said, gently shaking her. She rolled over and yawned.
“Good morning,” she said, rubbing her eyes, “What is it?”
“Morning,” I replied, “could you please tighten my stay?”
“Of course,” she said, taking the stay and slipping it on me. I grabbed onto the bed leg, and she pulled very hard.
“Now tie it,” I said, barely having any breath for talking as she tied a little bow, “Thank you.”
“Your very welcome,” she said, “now can you do mine?”
“Okay,” I said, pulling hers as tightly as she did mine. Then we both tied our pockets to our waists, wrapped our linen kercheifs around our necks, put on our mob caps, pulled on our underpetticoat, pulled on our over petticoat, put our gowns on, and slipped our shoes on. Then we saw Sarah walk in wearing silk stockings, a silk kercheif, a mob cap with lace, a stomacher with a flower pattern, leather, buckled shoes, and a clean gown.
“Well, good morning,” she said, “shall we get to work?”
We did our chores and made breakfast, and got to work baking our goods. We sold a few things, and I went on my morning walk. I saw a gentry person walking by who was wearing silk stockings, leather shoes with heels and buckles, she was probally wearing a hoop petticoat because her mantua bellowed around her, a lace cap, a silk kerchief, an indigo stomacher, and a beautiful silk gown.
“Good day,” she said, “so pleasant to see you!”
“Good day,” I replied, “I am your humble servant.” She nodded and walked away.
Then I saw a lower sort walk by. She was wearing pretty much the same thing as me, linen stockings, a cotton kercheif, leather shoes that were a little bit worn out, a linen cap, a plain stomacher, a white, cotton petticoat, and a plain, brown gown.
“Hello,” I said.
“Good morning,” she said, “nice day?”
“Yes,” I replied. She smiled and went off.
Tonight I will be going to church and I always look forward to it. Whenever I go to church I wear my Sunday outfit, which is basically like everyday outfit but nicer and cleaner. I wear a cotton kerchief, leather shoes, a lace cap, a fancy flower patterned stomacher, clean petticoats, and a nicer gown with lace on the sleeves. Kristen wore the same and Sarah wore a clean, silk kerchief, leather and buckled shoes, a lace cap, a flower patterned stomacher, a few clean petticoats, and a nice mantua.
When we were at church, I saw another gentry coming our way. She was wearing silk stockings, a silk kercheif, leather, buckled shoes with red heels, a lace cap, an indigo, flower patterned stomacher, a silk petticoat, and a silk gown.
I also noticed a middling sort going by. He was wearing silk stockings, wool breeches, leather, buckled shoes, a silk cravat, a wool waistcoat, a wool coat with a lot of facy buttons and big cuffs, a powdered wig, spectacles, a beaver tricorn hat, and was carrying a walking stick.
We came back home and had dinner, then went to our bedroom. I took off my gown first, then the petticoats, my cap, kercheif, shoes, my stockings, and I slipped my stomacher out from under my stay. Then finally, finally, finally, I untied the super tight stay and felt so relived that I could breath properly again, then slipped it off. I kept on my shift because I sleep in it.
“Good night,” I said to Kristen, who was already half asleep.
“Good night,” she yawned.
Then I closed my eyes, and went to sleep.
“Wake up,” I said, gently shaking her. She rolled over and yawned.
